DWP UNDIP Partners with Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialists to Prevent Sarcopenia in Approaching Fifty

UNDIP, Semarang (26/6) – The Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) of Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) held a health seminar entitled “Preventing Sarcopenia, Maintaining Muscles and Bones Approaching Fifty” as an effort to increase public awareness, especially women, regarding the importance of maintaining healthy muscles and bones as they age, especially at the age of Approaching Fifty (Jelang Lima Puluh / Jelita).

The seminar presented 2 (two) speakers, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialists, namely dr. Hari Peni Julianti, M.Kes., SpKFR, Ger-K, SpDLP, FISPH, FISCM, AIFO-K and dr. Aditya Paramita Andini, SP.krf, AIFO-K. The activity took place in the Ballroom of the Horison Inn Antawirya hotel, UNDIP Tembalang on Friday, June 26, 2026.

The event was attended by members of the DWP, consisting of 15 (fifteen) implementing units and 150 women of Universitas Diponegoro. In her opening speech, the Chair of the DWP UNDIP, Dewi Widayani Suharnomo, stated that maintaining muscle and bone health is an important investment for achieving a healthy, active, and independent old age. Through this seminar, participants are expected to gain a better understanding of steps to prevent sarcopenia through a healthy lifestyle.

On that occasion, DWP UNDIP also launched the ‘Permata Jelita’ magazine which featured the profile of Hasbiyah Iskandar, wife of Prof. Mohamad Nasir (Chairman of the UNDIP Board of Trustees). She is known as a pious person who is often asked to lead prayers at the Dharma Wanita Persatuan UNDIP activities. Another important information was also conveyed by the Chairperson of DWP UNDIP that (Childcare Center) TPA Permata UNDIP became the best TPA in Semarang for 2026. This achievement proves that the caretakers of TPA Permata UNDIP are capable and trustworthy.

In the presentation session, speaker dr. Hari Peni Julianti, M.Kes., SpKFR, Ger-K, SpDLP, FISPH, FISCM, AIFO-K explained that sarcopenia can be prevented through consuming a balanced, nutritious diet rich in protein, regular physical activity, especially muscle strengthening exercises, maintaining bone health, and regular health check-ups. In addition, participants were also provided with education on the importance of maintaining ideal body weight and meeting the needs of vitamins and minerals that play a role in muscle and bone health.

Regarding physical activity to prevent sarcopenia, speaker dr. Aditya Paramita Andini, SP.krf, AIFO-K, demonstrated exercise movements that can be done to prevent sarcopenia. Familiarly called dr. Mita, invited participants to do movements that can be done, including: resistance exercise (exercise that uses weights or resistance to increase strength and muscle mass); aerobic exercise; balance training; flexibility exercise; functional exercise; and proprioceptive exercise. dr. Mita recommends doing exercises, especially for the elderly more than or equal to 60 years, but must be accompanied by a companion to reduce risks such as falls or injuries.

The seminar was highly interactive, with a lively Q&A session that garnered high enthusiasm from the participants. Participants also enthusiastically followed the movements demonstrated by the speakers.

DWP UNDIP hopes this seminar will improve health literacy and support the creation of healthy, productive, and high-quality families. Adequate education on sarcopenia prevention can be a first step in maintaining muscle and bone health, allowing participants, especially elderly women, to enjoy a healthy and meaningful old age.
