UNDIP, Semarang (27/5) – A solemn and heartfelt atmosphere surrounded the memorial ceremony for Prof. Ir. Johannes Hutabarat, M.Sc., Ph.D., held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at 1:00 PM WIB at the SA-MWA Building, Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) Tembalang Campus. The late professor, one of the most distinguished academics of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK), was bid farewell by members of the academic community, family, colleagues, and partners after passing away on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
The passing of Prof. Johannes has brought profound sorrow to the UNDIP family, particularly within FPIK and the Graduate Program in Aquatic Resources Management. He is remembered not only as an academic and leader but also as a prominent figure who helped strengthen the foundations of fisheries, marine science, and aquatic resource management development in Indonesia.
Serving as the Ceremony Inspector, Rector of Universitas Diponegoro Prof. Dr. Suharnomo, S.E., M.Si., expressed his deep sense of loss at the passing of a figure known for his warmth and unwavering dedication. He recalled his last meeting with Prof. Johannes, during which they discussed several strategic collaboration plans—reflecting the late professor’s enduring commitment to advancing the institution.
“Personally and on behalf of Universitas Diponegoro, we have lost a figure who was exceptionally open-minded, helpful, and always present in efforts to advance the university. He was known as a pleasant individual who built relationships without barriers and consistently assisted others with sincerity,” the Rector said.
The Rector further noted that Prof. Johannes’s legacy was reflected not only in the positions he held but also in the tremendous energy he devoted to academic activities and cross-sector collaborations. “What he contributed to UNDIP and many other institutions is a valuable legacy. May Almighty God reward all his dedication, and may the family he leaves behind be granted strength and comfort,” Prof. Suharnomo added.
Prof. Johannes began his academic journey after graduating from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries at UNDIP in 1976. His passion for expertise led him to pursue both his Master’s and Doctoral degrees at the University of Stirling in the United Kingdom, an institution renowned for excellence in global aquatic research. He also broadened his perspective on national leadership by participating in PTSI’s Second Short Course Program at the National Resilience Institute (LEMHANAS) in 1999.
His leadership commitment at UNDIP was demonstrated through numerous strategic positions, including:
- Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) for two consecutive terms (2003–2011);
- Head of the Master’s Program in Aquatic Resources Management (MSDP) and pioneer of UNDIP’s Graduate Double Degree Program (2007–2012);
- Secretary of the UNDIP Professorial Senate (1990–1994); and
- Head of UNDIP’s Center for Research and Technology Development (1994–1997).
Prof. Johannes’s contributions extended far beyond UNDIP. His public service reached numerous educational institutions and professional organizations nationwide. He was actively involved in advancing coastal and aquaculture scientific communities, served as a national assessor, and held positions such as Vice Rector I of Semarang University (1996–2002). At the time of his passing, he was serving as Rector of Universitas Maritim AMNI for the 2024–2028 term.
In the maritime industry and policy sector, he played key roles as:
- Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Indonesian Aquaculture Society since 2020;
- Chairman of the Central Java Regional Center of the Coastal Partnership Consortium (Mitra Bahari) since 2006;
- Chairman of the Central Java Chapter of the Indonesian Association of Coastal Management Experts (HAPPI) since 2009;
- Chairman of the Forum of Leaders of Fisheries and Marine Higher Education Institutions of Indonesia (FP2TPKI); and
- BAN-PT Assessor for nearly three decades.
The memorial ceremony became a reflective moment for all attendees to honor the values Prof. Johannes exemplified throughout his life—integrity, compassion, and a collaborative spirit. His presence not only shaped institutional development but also inspired generations of academics to continue contributing to society.
